Two short cores of late Holocene, low tidal, estuarine sediment from the sheltered fringes of the Auckland's Waitemata Harbor, New Zealand, record the following changes through time since human colonization: an abrupt decline and disappearance of marine molluscs, a major decline and virtual disappearance of ostracods, an abrupt decline in calcareous foraminifera (mostlyAmmonia spp.), a rapid increase, in abundance of agglutinated foraminifera, large diatoms, and freshwater thecamoebians, and an increase in sedimentation rate, but no consistent trend in change of grain size. The up-core foraminiferal changes mimic their present day up-estuary zonation, which correlates strongly with decreasing salinity and pH. In both localities the faunal changes can be correlated with the documented local land-use history and increased freshwater runoff over time. At the head of the Waitemata Harbor, in Lucas Creek estuary, three phases of foraminiferal faunal change occurred: minor changes during initial Polynesian forest clearance (1500–1800 AD), a major change in early European times (1840–1870 AD) with clearance of most of the remaining native forest, and another small change in very, recent times (∼1990s) with urbanization in the Lucas Creek catchment. On the eastern, seaward fringes of the Waitemata Harbor, in the smaller Tamaki Estuary, no faunal changes occurred in association with complete forest clearance and establishment of pastoral farming in Polynesian and early European times (before 1950s). Major foraminiferal and other faunal changes occurred in the late European period (1960s–1970s) coincident with the onset of major urbanization spreading throughout the Tamaki catchment. Our results suggest increased freshwater runoff is the major culprit for many of the observed biotic changes in the urbanized estuaries of New Zealand.  相似文献

We present the rationale, design, and use of an instrument system to measure the variability of vertical and horizontal particle fluxes. The system features a new sequentially sampling sediment trap which collects and seals 10 separate samples during a single deployment. Horizontal particle fluxes are simultaneously monitored with a beam transmissometer interfaced to a standard Aanderaa current meter. Results from a 10-week deployment of instruments at several depths in a deep fjord estuary indicate that the trapping rate increases from 0.5g m−2 day−1 at 20 m to 150g m−2 day−1 at 200 m (5 m above bottom) because of frequent erosion in the deep waters. Periodic flushing of the deep water by intrusions of marine water over the seaward sill markedly enhances erosion and causes an up-estuary particle transport comparable to the vertical particle flux originating at the surface.  相似文献

The equilibrium between spinel lherzolite and garnet lherzolite has been experimentally determined in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system between 800° and 1,100° C. In confirmation of earlier work and predictions from thermodynamic data, it was found that theP-T slope of the reaction was close to zero, the equilibrium ranging from 16.1 kb at 800° C to 18.7 kb at 1,100° C (±0.3 kb). The addition of Cr2O3 to the system raised the stability field of spinel to higher pressures. It was found that the pressure at which both garnet and spinel could exist with olivine+orthopyroxene+clinopyroxene in the system CMAS ?Cr2O3 could best be described by the empirical relationship: $$P = P^{\text{O}} + \alpha X_{{\text{Cr}}}^{s{\text{p}}} $$ whereP 0 is the equilibrium pressure for the univariant reaction in the Cr2O3-free system,α is a constant apparently independent of temperature with a value of 27.9 kilobars, andX Cr sp is the mole fraction of chromium in spinel. Use was made of the extensive literature on Mg-Fe2+ solid solutions to quantitatively derive the effect of Fe2+ on the equilibrium. The effect of other components (Fe3+, Na) was also considered. The equilibrium can be used as a sensitive geobarometer for rocks containing the five phases ol+opx+cpx+gt+sp, and thus provides the only independent check presently available for the more widely applicable geobarometer which uses the alumina content of orthopyroxene in equilibrium with garnet.  相似文献

Garnets and pyroxenes from granulites ranging in composition from trondhjemitic to ultramafic were analysed with the electron probe in order to test current geothermometric and geobarometric models. A consistent pressure and temperature estimate based on garnet-pyroxene equilibria shows that the peak of metamorphism was at 820±50°C and 11 kb and implies a minimum crustal thickness of 30 km and a maximum geothermal gradient of 25–28°C, km?1, at 2700 Ma in the Scourie area. These results are in contrast to earlier more extreme P-T estimates of 1150±100°C and 15±3 kb.  相似文献

The diffusion, substitution mechanism and solubility limits of Zr and Hf in synthetic forsterite (Mg2SiO4) and San Carlos olivine (Mg0.9Fe0.1)2SiO4 have been investigated between 1,200 and 1,500 °C as a function of the chemical potentials of the components in the system MgO(FeO)–SiO2–ZrO2(HfO2). The effect of oxygen fugacity and crystallographic orientation were also investigated. The solubilities of Zr in forsterite are highest and diffusion fastest when the coexisting three-phase source assemblage includes ZrSiO4 (zircon) or HfSiO4 (hafnon), and lower and slower, respectively, when the source assemblage includes MgO (periclase). This indicates that Zr and Hf substitute on the octahedral sites in olivine, charge balanced by magnesium vacancies. Diffusion is anisotropic, with rates along the crystal axes increasing in the order a < b < c. The generalized diffusion relationship as a function of chemical activity (as \(a_{{{\text{SiO}}_{2} }}\)), orientation and temperature is: \(logD_{\text{Zr}} = \frac{1}{4}loga_{{{\text{SiO}}_{2} }} + logD_{0} - \left( {\frac{{368 \pm 17\;{\text{kJ}}\;{\text{mol}}^{ - 1} }}{{2.303\;{\text{RT}}}}} \right)\) where the values of log D 0 are ?3.8(±0.5), ?3.4(±0.5) and ?3.1(±0.5) along the a, b and c axes, respectively. Most experiments were conducted in air (fO2 = 10?0.68 bars), but one at fO2 = 10?11.2 bars at 1,400 °C shows no resolvable effect of oxygen fugacity on Zr diffusion. Hf is slightly more soluble in olivine than Zr, but diffuses slightly slower. Diffusivities of Zr in experiments in San Carlos olivine at 1,400 °C, fO2 = 10?6.6 bars are similar to those in forsterite at the same conditions, showing that the controls on diffusivities are adequately captured by the simple system (nominally iron-free) experiments. Diffusivities are in good agreement with those measured by Spandler and O’Neill (Contrib Miner Petrol 159:791–818, 2010) in San Carlos olivine using silicate melt as the source at 1,300 °C, and fall within the range of most measurements of Fe–Mg inter-diffusion in olivine at this temperature. Forsterite–melt partitioning experiments in the CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–ZrO2/HfO2 show that the interface concentrations from the diffusion experiments represent true equilibrium solubilities. Another test of internal consistency is that the ratios of the interface concentrations between experiments buffered by Mg2SiO4 + Mg2Si2O6 + ZrSiO4 or Mg2SiO4 + ZrSiO4 + ZrO2 (high silica activity) to those buffered by Mg2SiO4 + MgO + ZrO2 (low silica activity) agree well with the ratios calculated from thermodynamic data. This study highlights the importance of buffering chemical potentials in diffusion experiments to provide constraints on the interface diffusant concentrations and hence validate the assumption of interface equilibrium.  相似文献

Naturally occurring isotopes of radon (222Rn) and radium isotopes (223,224,226,228Ra) were used as tracers to assess submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) into Little Lagoon, AL (USA), a site of recurring harmful algal blooms (HABs). The radium isotopic data suggests that there are two groundwater sources of these tracers to the lagoon, a shallow (A1) and deeper (A2) aquifer. We estimated the fraction of each source via a three-end-member mixing model consisting of Gulf of Mexico seawater, shallow and deep groundwater. The estimated lagoonwide SGD rates based on a radium mass balance and the mixing model were 1.22?±?0.53 and 1.59?±?0.20 m3 s-1 for the shallow and deep groundwater discharges, respectively. To investigate temporal variations in SGD, we performed several radon surveys from 2010 through 2012, a period of generally declining groundwater levels due to a drought in the southeastern USA. The total SGD rates based on a radon mass balance approach were found to vary from 0.60 to 2.87 m3 s-1. We observed well-defined relationships between nutrients and chlorophyll-a in lagoon waters during a period when there was an intense diatom bloom in April 2010 and when no bloom existed in March 2011. A good correlation was also found between radium (groundwater-derived) and nutrients during the April 2010 period, while there was no clear relationship between the same parameters in March 2011. Based on multivariate analysis of chemical and environmental factors, we suggest that nutrient-rich inputs during high SGD may be a significant driver of algal blooms, but during low SGD periods, multiple drivers are responsible for the occurrence of algal blooms.  相似文献

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is now recognized as an important source of nutrients and freshwater to some coastal environments. We studied a shallow coastal lagoon (Little Lagoon, AL, USA) in the northern Gulf of Mexico that lacks riverine inputs but has been suspected to receive significant SGD. We observed persistent salinity gradients between the east and west ends of the lagoon and the pass connecting it to the Gulf of Mexico. Covariance between salinity in the lagoon and the groundwater tracer 222Rn indicated that SGD was responsible for the salinity gradients and is the primary source of freshwater to the lagoon. Cluster analysis of 246 biweekly samples based on temperature, salinity, and two proxies of SGD revealed two hydrographic regimes with different drivers for nutrient inputs. In samples characterized by high discharge and low temperatures (generally December–April), total nitrogen (TN) was negatively correlated with salinity, while total phosphorus (TP) was positively correlated with temperature. Total nitrogen in the groundwater was very high (0.36–4.80 mM) while total phosphorus was relatively low (0.3–2.3 μM), consistent with SGD as the source of TN during the high-discharge periods. In periods with low discharge and higher temperatures (approx. May–November), TN and TP had strong positive correlations with temperature and are inferred to originate from benthic efflux. Seasonal changes in nutrient stoichiometry in the lagoon water column also indicate an alternation between low TN/TP sediments and high TN/TP groundwater as the primary sources of nitrogen in this system.  相似文献

The Rolling‐Ball Rubber‐Layer (RBRL) system was developed to enable seismic isolation of lightweight structures, such as special equipment or works of art, and is very versatile, a great range of equivalent natural frequencies and coefficients of damping being achievable through choice of the system parameters. The necessity to have a simple and effective design procedure has led to a new parametric experimentation at Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC) on the rolling behaviour of the RBRL system and load–deflection behaviour of the recentering springs. The experimental results, together with theories for the rolling resistance of a loaded steel ball on a thin rubber layer and the lateral load–deflection behaviour of cylindrical rubber springs, are used to develop a general design method for the RBRL system, which allows the system to be tailored to the specific application. Sinusoidal test results are presented for the small‐deflection behaviour of the system, influenced by the presence of a viscoelastic depression on the rubber tracks beneath each ball, and an amplitude‐dependent time‐domain model is proposed, based on these results and on the steady‐state behaviour of the system. Changes in sediment flux to continental margins are commonly interpreted in terms of tectonic growth of topography or climatic change. Here, we show that variations in sediment yield from orogenic systems, previously considered as resulting from climate change, drainage reorganisation or mantle processes can be explained by intrinsic mechanisms of mountain belt/foreland basin systems naturally evolving during post-orogenic decay. Numerical modelling indicates an increase of sediment flux leaving the orogenic system synchronous with the cessation of deposition in the foreland basin and the transition from late syn- to post-orogenesis. Experiments highlight the importance of lithospheric flexure that causes the post-orogenic isostatic rebound of the foreland basin. Erosion of the rebounding foreland basin combined with continued sediment flux from the thrust wedge drives an acceleration in sediment outflux towards continental margins. Sediment budget records in natural settings such as the Northern Pyrenees or Western European Alps also indicate accelerated post-orogenic sediment delivery to the Bay of Biscay and Rhône Delta respectively. These intrinsic processes that determine sediment yield to continental margins must be accounted for prior to consideration of additional external tectonic or climatic controls.  相似文献
